Tourism Fiji Launches ‘Bin it or Bag it’ to Drive Sustainability Efforts News October 8, 2024 | Press Release Tourism Fiji has unveiled a new initiative called “Bin it or Bag it,” aimed at promoting a litter-free environment across the island nation. Launched in collaboration with private sector leaders and local partners, the campaign emphasizes responsible waste management to preserve Fiji’s natural beauty. The idea for this initiative emerged from the 2023 Fiji Tourism Convention, where stakeholders identified litter reduction as a crucial step toward sustainability. Leading private sector companies, including Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, Grand Pacific Hotel, The Holiday Inn, Rosie Holidays, and Ahura Resorts, spearheaded the campaign. Together, they raised over FJ$100,000 in support and contributed media space and creative expertise, reflecting the industry’s collective dedication to environmental conservation. The campaign encourages both locals and tourists to “Bin it or Bag it”—depositing trash in bins where available, or storing it in a bag until a proper disposal option is found. This simple yet effective approach aims to foster a culture of cleanliness across Fiji and inspire broader participation in sustainability efforts. Tourism Fiji collaborated with local talents, such as musician Kuki and creative studio Lily Kate, to create an engaging multimedia campaign. A memorable jingle and distinctive Fijian-inspired illustrations are central to the initiative, including the introduction of ‘Kasikasi,’ a character designed to promote responsible waste management. Reusable bags emblazoned with the campaign’s slogan will be available at various outlets, reinforcing the message of sustainability. “We are thrilled to launch the ‘Bin it or Bag it’ campaign with our partners,” said Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji. “This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainable tourism and underscores the shared responsibility we all have to protect Fiji’s environment.” The campaign will be widely visible across billboards, newspapers, radio, and digital platforms. Additionally, Tourism Fiji is working closely with the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation and the Ministry for Environment and Climate Change to ensure the initiative aligns with Fiji’s broader national sustainability goals. Tourism Fiji’s Chief Marketing Officer, Srishti Narayan, highlighted the power of collective action, stating, “When community, industry, and government come together, they create a powerful force for positive change. We are grateful to our partners and encourage everyone to join us in making Fiji cleaner and greener.” The “Bin it or Bag it” campaign is set to play a key role in Fiji’s drive toward sustainable tourism, aiming to not only preserve the nation’s beauty but also create lasting environmental awareness among both locals and visitors.
