In a significant move to enhance air connectivity between Central Asia and South Asia, Air Astana, the national carrier of Kazakhstan, has inaugurated a new direct flight route between Almaty and Mumbai. This development, effective from April 20, 2025, marks the airline’s 20th anniversary of operations in India and underscores its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.​

The Almaty–Mumbai service operates thrice weekly—on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays—utilizing Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft. The inaugural flight departs Almaty at 04:30 local time, arriving in Mumbai at 09:55, with the return leg leaving Mumbai at 11:00 and landing in Almaty at 14:45. The outbound journey spans approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes, while the return flight takes about 4 hours and 20 minutes.

Peter Foster, Chief Executive Officer of Air Astana, expressed enthusiasm about the new route, stating, “With the Indian economy growing strongly, Air Astana is delighted to launch services to Mumbai, a vibrant and flourishing metropolis driven by trade, finance, and enterprise. Business and leisure travellers will now be able to experience the excellence of Air Astana’s in-services when flying between Kazakhstan’s and India’s most commercial cities”.

The introduction of the Almaty–Mumbai route complements Air Astana’s existing services to Delhi, where the airline operates nine weekly flights. This expansion reflects the growing demand for air travel between Kazakhstan and India, driven by increasing economic cooperation, tourism, and cultural exchanges.​
