Uganda Airlines Aims to Become a Hub in Africa for Indian Travellers Exclusives News March 7, 2025 | By Anita Jain Shah Uganda Airlines is making strategic moves to tap into the growing demand from the Indian market, positioning itself as a key gateway to East Africa. While Indian travellers have traditionally favoured destinations like Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Seychelles, and Mauritius, Uganda is now emerging as an exciting new choice, thanks to its diverse wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and direct air connectivity from Mumbai (launched in 2023). Boasting the famous Big Five and the rare mountain gorillas, Uganda offers an unparalleled safari experience. With lush flora and fauna, the country is a paradise for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and wildlife enthusiasts. Uganda Airlines is actively working to showcase these attractions to Indian travellers and travel trade professionals. Strategic Initiatives to Boost Demand “We are taking all-round efforts to bring Uganda closer to Indian travellers and increase our flight demand. This includes participating in trade shows, connecting with Indian travel trade associations, and facilitating meetings between Uganda’s travel suppliers and Indian travel agencies,” said Lenny Malasi, Country Manager, Uganda Airlines. He further added, “We are also leveraging digital platforms through webinars and organizing familiarisation trips for trade partners, media representatives, and influencers in 2025.” Expanding Connectivity and Enhancing Services Currently, Uganda Airlines operates three weekly flights from Mumbai to Entebbe on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. The airline has deployed Airbus A330neo on Mumbai route, which features 20 Business Class seats, 28 Premium Economy seats, and 210 Economy seats. “We understand the needs of Indian travellers, and that’s why we offer not just vegetarian but also Jain meal options on board our flights from and to India,” he added. The airline, which currently operates a fleet of seven aircraft, has ambitious expansion plans. “With growing demand from India, we intend to introduce new destinations and increase flight frequency from Mumbai soon,” Malasi confirmed. Simplified Visa Process for Indian Travellers To further facilitate travel, Uganda has moved from a sticker visa system to an e-visa for Indian travellers, valid for three months. This makes it easier than ever for Indian tourists and business travellers to visit Uganda. Positioning as a Regional Connector “Our vision is to be an enabler for Uganda and the rest of Africa. We aim to not only boost travel between India and Uganda but also act as a feeder airline for both markets,” said Malasi. With a combination of increased marketing efforts, enhanced connectivity, and traveler-friendly initiatives, Uganda Airlines is set to redefine the travel landscape between India and Uganda, opening doors to a new era of tourism and trade between the two nations.
