Moscow: An Indian Travel Agent’s Guide to Russia’s Capital

August 1, 2025 | By Anita Jain Shah

Moscow is more than Russia’s political capital—it’s a vibrant city where imperial history meets sleek modernity. For Indian travellers, it offers a mix of architectural wonders, cultural depth, luxury experiences, and shopping. The average Indian visitor spends three to four nights here, often combining the trip with St. Petersburg. May–June and September are the most comfortable months for sightseeing, while December–January offers magical winter landscapes and festive charm.

Getting Around the City
The Moscow Metro is an attraction in itself, with stations decorated like palaces, featuring mosaics, chandeliers, and sculptures. It’s fast, affordable, and increasingly signposted in English. For FITs and MICE groups, private transfers are ideal, especially for airport commutes that can take an hour or more. Many key sights—like Red Square, the Kremlin, and the Bolshoi Theatre—are within walking distance, making guided walking tours an easy add-on.

Where to Stay
Accommodation options range from ultra-luxury to midscale comfort. High-end travellers can choose from The Ritz-Carlton Moscow, The Carlton Moscow, or the Four Seasons Moscow, all with prime locations and exceptional service. For MICE groups or business travellers, Ararat Park Hyatt and Radisson Collection Hotel Moscow combine modern meeting facilities with central convenience. Midscale choices like Azimut Smolenskaya or Novotel Moscow Centre provide good value for leisure groups and FITs looking for comfort without extravagance.

Must-See Sights and Experiences
Red Square is the city’s showpiece, home to St. Basil’s Cathedral with its colourful domes, the Kremlin with its Armoury Chamber filled with royal treasures, and GUM, a grand department store under a stunning glass roof. The Tretyakov Gallery offers a deep dive into Russian art, while a guided Moscow Metro tour reveals why it’s called “the palace of the people.” Evenings can be spent at the Bolshoi Theatre for a world-class ballet or opera performance, or on a river cruise along the Moskva to see illuminated landmarks. For a modern contrast, Moscow City’s skyscraper observation decks provide panoramic views, and Zaryadye Park’s floating bridge offers one of the best photo spots in town.

Food for Indian and Vegetarian Travellers
While Russian cuisine often features meat and fish, vegetarian travellers will find several friendly options. Jagannath serves Indian and international vegetarian dishes, while Darbar and Khajuraho cater specifically to Indian tastes, ideal for both FITs and group meals. Local dishes like borscht (vegetarian version), blini with cheese, and Olivier salad without meat are worth trying. Combining Indian dinners with occasional Russian lunches can make the experience authentic yet comfortable.

Shopping Hotspots
For luxury shopping, GUM and TSUM stock global designer brands. For souvenirs, Izmailovsky Market is a treasure trove of matryoshka dolls, hand-painted lacquer boxes, Soviet-era memorabilia, and shawls. Arbat Street, with its cafés and boutiques, is a great place to spend a relaxed afternoon and pick up small keepsakes.

Practical Tips for Agents
Russian visas for Indian nationals take two to three weeks to process and require an invitation letter from a hotel or DMC. English is not widely spoken outside tourist zones, so recommending a local guide can significantly enhance the experience. Due to sanctions, some international cards may not work—clients should carry cash in euros or USD for local exchange. Seasonal events are a strong selling point: summer offers open-air concerts and boat tours, while winter brings Christmas markets and ice skating at VDNKh.
