Kenya based Sarova Hotels & Resorts Celebrates 50 Years of Hospitality Excellence

May 31, 2024 | Press Release

Kenya’s tourism industry is aglow with celebration as Sarova Hotels & Resorts marks its 50th anniversary in April 2024. This golden jubilee is more than a milestone; it is a testament to a rich legacy of service and values that have shaped the brand’s journey since 1974. Founded by G.S. Vohra, Mohinder Singh Vohra, and John Ngata Kariuki, Sarova Hotels was born out of a familial vision, its name an acronym of their wives’ first names: Swaran Vohra, Rose Kariuki, and Varsha Vohra.

The journey began with the acquisition of the Ambassadeur Hotel on Moi Avenue, which remained in the family until 1998. Over the decades, Sarova has grown its footprint across Kenya with nine properties that reflect a commitment to quality and innovation. These include Sarova Stanley & Sarova Panafric in Nairobi, Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa in Mombasa, and several game lodges and hotels in Nakuru, Samburu, Masai Mara, Kisumu, and Nanyuki. The recent addition, Thai Chi by Sarova in Nairobi, underscores the brand’s evolution and dedication to culinary excellence.

Sarova’s commitment extends beyond hospitality to nurturing talent, fostering inclusivity, and empowering local communities through employment and skill development. The brand’s sustainable practices include responsible waste management, water conservation, and a commitment to renewable energy, ensuring that Kenya’s natural beauty is preserved for future generations.

“Achieving 50 years of operation is not merely a milestone but a hallmark of resilience, adaptation, and enduring commitment to quality and innovation,” said Jimi Kariuki, MD, Sarova Hotels, during the anniversary celebrations at Sarova Stanley. He emphasised that this achievement places Sarova Hotels & Resorts in an elite group that has evolved with technological advancements, economic shifts, and changing consumer behaviours.

Mita Vohra, Director of Sales, Marketing, Revenue & Distribution, Sarova Hotels & Resorts, added, “Sarova Hotels is a heartwarming story of family and friendships coming together to realise a dream in hospitality. Celebrating this milestone of 50 years is a tribute to our founders and all our partners who have supported us through the decades. With each passing year, Sarova’s future looks brighter than ever.”

Sarova Hotels & Resorts’ story is one of unwavering dedication to showcasing the best of Kenya, offering guests luxury and a deep connection to the land and its people. As Sarova celebrates this significant milestone, it continues to embody the legacy and forward-thinking approach that has defined its success for half a century.
